So far I have covered a range of trees from: Construction and Farming. I am now going to cover the Smithing skill tree where you can find ore in the land, Mine it out of the ground, Smelt in up into metal goods and then forge metal tools/weapons and armour!
In this post I am going to go over my own experience grinding up the smithing tree skills:
- Prospecting
- Mining
- Smelting
- Forging
- Armour Smithing
Prospecting: To start grinding up your prospecting skill, it isn't to start looking for Iron. First you want to gather as much flint stones up as possible. These will serve you better when you go to craft your first primitive tools! This should level you too at least level 30-40 so from here you can start to prospect for Iron/Copper ore (these are the two most abundant ore types). As soon as you reach level 60 in prospecting you should have already found Iron/Copper ore by this time. Now you can craft a pickaxe and this brings up to the next skill. Other ways to grind this skill is to collect Sling ammo instead of flintstones, but regardless of what you do; you still have to collect flintstones to make tools to advance.
Mining: So now that you have your prospecting and using it to both make your pickaxe and find your iron/copper ore. You can now start mining the area you believe there is ore! (Bare in mind you need level 60 terraforming to start mining tunnels which are required: level 60 terraforming) Once you puch through to the ore, you can now stop using Terraforming -> Dig tunnel. You can now right click the tunnel wall littered in ore and start mining it out: there is no other way to mine but this. It may take you a good few hits to reach level 60. A useful tip: Make an infinte pile using the ore you gather (make sure its the highest quality you can mine out) This way you don't have to constantly mine the tunnels!
Smelting: This is where the fun starts. First off you will probably be wanting to make an anvil and forge which will allow you to skill up in forging, the following skill from smelting. Once you have your Anvil and Forge and possibly Two furnaces and a kiln: You can to start by creating plenty of charcoal to help keep the furnaces going. throw in 80 ore and 20 charcoal in each furnace. Once the ore is ready to smelt: the fastest method of level this skill up is Smelting lumps! You get 2 lumps for every 1 ore smelted! So you will reach level 90 possibly in one sitting of smelting lumps! Another useful smelted good is common Bars which will allow you to craft tool kits! Common ingots are also useful for crafting better tools! Level 90 is recommended due to having the recycle skill!
Forging: Now as we smelted up so many lumps in the previous skill we can now put them to very good use! Equip your Smithy hammer (use a primitive hammer to craft this tool at your forge). Select Forge: Forge metal tools! Select nails and just dedicate some time to getting a coffee/tea whilst your character auto-crafts the nails for you. At this rate you should have around 100-150 lumps ready for the forge to make into nails! At this rate you will probably reach level 90, maybe needing an additional 10-20 lumps t reach level 90. Other methods of grinding this skill involve using Bars to make Metal bands for tanning tubs/wheels/shields etc. However nails seem too be the most cost effective to use since you will need them for a mix of other craftable items!
Armor Smithing: So we're on teh very last skill of the smithing tree! Now it's in your best interest to level your armour skills in your combat trees with this skill: If you have level 60 chaimmail armours then you want to have level 60 armour smithing to compensate incase you lose it. However, the easiest way to grind up this skill is to construct a bloomery and throw in 360 ore and 40 charcoal and smelt all of that into common bars. Take these bars and start crafting them into light chainmail helms: they only require 1 common bar so you can just endlessly craft them just like your nails in the forging skill! Bare in mind if you do have someone in your team who needs chainmail, craft them a full set before grinding this: You are going to use A LOT of metal goods. It is highly recommended you reach level 100 for Royal Armour smithing!
